Bio
With a raw and powerful voice, Canada’s Kim Wempe leaves an imprint on your soul and weaves a melody you just can’t shake. Her evocative artistic style, fiercely emotional lyrics and honest onstage performance have earned her international attention. Kim has performed this year at the In The Dead of Winter Festival in Halifax and Wakefield, Winterfolk in Toronto, a two week residency at Atlantic Canada House for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, showcased on the Rising Star Stage at the 2010 ECMA’s and performed in the finale of the ECMA Gala Awards Show. Her song “Oh Heart” has been featured in the Showcase Network’s drama “Cra$h & Burn” and is a semi-finalist in the 2009 International Songwriting Competition.
While Kim’s first full-length album The Last Version (2007) captures a range of toe-tapping rhythms and styles from soulful blues melodies, to jazz-influenced folk tunes, her Where I Need to Be EP (2009) was recognized with a 2010 East Coast Music Award for Galaxie Rising Star Recording of Year, a Nova Scotia Music Award (Folk Recording of the Year), and an upcoming album, Painting With Tides, due for release in 2010. The new record was recorded with Halifax’s Charles Austin (Joel Plaskett, David Myles, Thom Swift) and features contributions from Plaskett, Swift and Old Man Luedecke. Her critically acclaimed “Guess Who’s Driving?” tour with Carmel Mikol has played to more than 50 markets across Canada and will make its way to New Zealand and Australia in 2011.
